The Underrated Indonesian Restaurant in Dubai

Most of us Indonesian are attached with our local cuisines, especially the sambal. It’s like wherever we go overseas no other cuisine can beat the spiciness of Indonesian sambal. If you don’t know this, sambal is a condiment of chilli paste mixture of red chilli, garlic, shallots, (sometimes) tomatoes, shrimp paste with a bit of sugar (or palm sugar) and salt. Along with sambal, we also love our rice. Many Indonesian even bring their own mini rice cooker when they visit Europian countries, or other countries in general.

Ironically, as much as we love our food, finding an authentic Indonesian restaurant overseas is not as easy as you can find a Thai food restaurant, Japanese restaurant, Philipine cuisines or Vietnamese restaurant. People say it’s because of the challenges in getting the right ingredients, and if any, it’s expensive. I would say I agree with that. I can’t even find candlenuts here and have to drive all the way to Dubai, to the Indonesian mini market to get some.

So, going back to the attachment to our cuisine, obviously I would always go to an Indonesian restaurant in most occassion. One that I would talk about is Seleraku Restaurant. A little place, pinched in between store arcade, next to Alfa Mart in 21 street, Al Karama, Dubai.

It has a see-through door and window so you can see clearly what is happening inside. Holds a capacity for only 3 to 4 tables indoor, Seleraku Restaurant offers an affordable authentic Indonesian cuisine with a lot of variety in its menu list.

My top choice is their Soto Mie Bogor. A noodle soup from Bogor, a region in Indonesia, in thick and savory broth served hot with rice. It is so fresh and delicious. Few times I has asked J to go back to Seleraku just to have the Soto Mie.

Yes, it is THAT good!

I would say that this restaurant is underrated and deserves more limelight. It is not fancy, but it carries ‘street food’ theme that even more satiating to the Indonesian palate.

If you are ever in Dubai, or Karama area, try to taste some of their menu items. I believe you won’t regret it.
